A 53-year old actress has been under excessive stress for the last year and a half. She is experiencing diffuse thinning in the crown of her head. She has mild itching in the area but there are no physical signs of trauma or flaking. She has noticed the thinning over the course of 3-4 years. She is currently menopausal. She is in good physical health with no systemic conditions present. Her mother experienced gradual hair loss as she got older but she is not aware of any other history of hair loss in her family. There are also two small patches of severe breakage at the nape of her neck. She explains how a year ago, the areas were completely smooth. She experiences mild itching in the area. She does scratch and rub the area when she feels the itch. The itching is more prominent when she is experiencing stress. Currently there is hair in the area but it is very short. Over the last year she experienced some growth but the hair has not grown long and it breaks short again. She wears her own hair in small twists and also uses a permanent color to tint her hair an auburn color to cover her grey.

A 27-year-old teacher is experiencing severe breakage and diffuse thinning through out her scalp in no distinct pattern. There are no areas of alopecia, but the hair is broken near the scalp. She’s been under excessive stress in the last year and recalls when she was a child she would twist and pull at the hair subconsciously. She is in good physical health with no systemic conditions present. There is also know history of hair loss in her family. She is not taking any medications and she maintains a balanced diet. She experiences pain, sporadic itching and tenderness throughout the scalp. Upon magnifying her scalp there were small bumps present with several areas that look like ingrown hairs.
